The Shepherdsons Today
The Shepherdson families today in Malaysia and Singapore are the descendents of John.
In Singapore, there are two major but different families of Shepherdsons, which on the
surface looks unrelated. However, the families are connected five generations back.
Their ancestors, Robert John and Mathew are presumed to be siblings, both the sons
of John Shepherdson. Both of them were married in the same church in Malacca.
Evidence of their relationship is seen in the baptism of Raymond Doral where Laurentia
(son of Robert) and Mary Shepherdson were not present and Mathew Shepherdson stood as
proxy, implying there was a close relationship between Mathew and Robert. (Robert John is believed to have worked in the 1803 Indian regiment.)
The Singapore family tree branches originate from both Cuthbert Aloysius (son of James Domingo and grandson of
Mathew) and Laurenco Justinian (son of Robert John), who presumably migrated to Singapore
during the early 1900s. In Malaysia, Shepherdsons are still prominent in Malacca and Kuala
Lumpur today but there seems to be no traces of Shepherdsons still in Perak and Penang. One
of the puzzles still not solved is that there were Shepherdsons even in Penang in the
late 19th century.
According to the records in the Church of Immaculate Conception, Penang, Virginian
Whiledminia was married to Jerome Boudville on 16 Oct 1896. Her parents were Henry and
Alexandria Shepherdson. It is therefore estimated that Virginian was born around
1870-75 while Henry Shepherdson, her father was born during the period 1845-55.
This categorizes him in the same generation as Mathew, John Jr, and Robert John.
It is unknown how he is related to them. | |||
