Origin of the Surname "Shepherdson"
T
he surname SHEPHERDSON
simply means son of the shepherd. The following surnames also mean the same:
- Skeperdson
- Skeppardson
- Shepperdson
- Shepperson
- Shipperdson
All the above surnames are similar in pronunciation. With improvements of
the English Language, these spellings have changed throughout the course
of history.
The SHEPHERDSON FAMILY originates from England. Interestingly, there
exist today in England many other SHEPHERDSONS who could possibly have
been related to those in Singapore and Malaysia generations ago.
The first few names recorded in early England are:
- John Schephirdson - 1332 SRCU
(Subsidy Rolls; unpublished, Cumberland)
- Ralph Schiperdson - 1509 GildY
(Register of the Guild of Corpus
- Christie, York, 1872
The surnames in England in the past centuries usually reflected their occupations.
Being a shepherd was a common occupation. Wool was England's most important
product after food for its people. Almost every manor had its flock of sheep.
In reality, Shepherd is itself already a surname. The name would have been
more common than it is if there had not been so many shepherds in some districts
that it did not make sufficient distinction.
We can only guess that the surname Shepherdson was derived to depict
the later generation and to distinguish it from the common surname of
Shepherd.
Interestingly, a search on the Internet and online genealogy records
show that Shepherdsons exist today in other countries:
- United States
- Canada
- Australia
Presumably, certain Shepherdson families had migrated to these countries.
